Cuando enviamos un presupuesto web a un cliente, debemos detallar el precio de diseño, maquetación y desarrollo web, pero también los costes de dominio y hosting. Para los que trabajamos en este negocio, dominio (tu nombre en internet) y hosting son términos familiares que usamos diariamente, pero muchas veces el cliente no sabe en que consiste el término específico de Hosting. En alguna ocasión me han preguntado si es necesario el uso del hosting para tener una web funcionando, para solo pagar el coste del dominio. He escrito artículos explicando la diferencia entre hosting gratuito y hosting de pago o hosting compartido y dedicado, pero en este artículo quiero ir a lo básico y aclarar dudas que les puede surgir a los clientes a la hora de pagar por el servicio de hosting y sepan lo que están comprando.

¿Qué es un hosting?

Cuando creamos una web, del tipo que sea, necesitamos guardar los archivos, imágenes, vídeos, archivos de texto, base de datos, o cualquier contenido accesible vía Web en un ordenador, que funciona como servidor y almacenamiento web que llamamos hosting (término inglés), de manera que cuando el usuario acceda a la web, acceda a ese ordenador para descargar los archivos necesarios y poder visualizarla correctamente. Además también almacena cuentas de correo, cuentas FTP y nos permite configurar ciertos parámetros del servidor para el funcionamiento de la web, por ejemplo podemos determinar el peso máximo de un archivo subido por el usuario, o el tiempo máximo para ejecutar código web. Es una analogía de habitaciones en hoteles, donde uno ocupa un lugar específico. Siguiendo con la analogía, las empresas encargadas de darte este servicio de «habitaciones» para tu web se llaman Web Host y hay muchísimas por todo el mundo. Hace tiempo escribí un artículo sobre el servicio de hosting en España frente a otros extranjeros en el que no dejaba muy bien parado este servicio en el país, aunque reconozco que el panorama a mejorado bastante.

¿Es necesario contratar los servicios de hosting para tener una web?

No. Podéis almacenar vuestra web en servidores gratuitos, donde os conceden unos servicios limitados y generalmente con publicidad de terceros, que mediante plantillas prediseñadas podéis tener una web en funcionamiento. En función de los requisitos de cada negocio es aconsejable contratar un servicio de hosting gratuito o un servicio de hosting pago (generalmente no se paga más de 60€/año). En este artículo podéis leer las ventajas e inconvenientes de usar un hosting gratuito o de pago. Personalmente desaconsejo la opción de hosting gratuito para un negocio que tenga una mínima intención de ir en serio en internet.

In addition storage email accounts, ftp accounts and it allows us set some parameters of server, for example, we can set maximun weight of a file upload by users, or maximum time to run web code. It is as hotel rooms, where you are in a specific place. The bussiness charged to give you this service room are called Web Host and there are a lot around the world. Do you need contract a hosting service to have a website?

No. You can storage our website in free servers, where they give you a limit services, in general with advice from other companies, and you can have a website working with default templates. Its depend each bussiness need it, is better a free hosting or a paid hosting (in general don’t pay more than 60€/year).
